World Cancer Day

January 25, 2018

Sunday February 4th is world cancer day. Cancer directly and indirectly affects everyone on the planet. Prevention is very important to decrease your risk of cancer. Lifestyle habits such as smoking, lots of exposure to UV, and alcohol consumption can increase your risk of cancer. However, recent studies have discovered that living a sedentary lifestyle can be just as detrimental.

There is strong evidence that moderate and vigorous activity decreases the risk of bowel, uterine and post-menopausal breast cancer. Vigorous activity also decreases the risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer. On top of this, physical activity helps manage weight gain and decreases the danger of being overweight or obese. Bowel, liver, pancreas, and post-menopausal breast cancer are all linked to obesity.

Follow these physical activity recommendations to prevent these cancers and possibly many other cancers:

  • Be moderately active (equivalent to brisk walk) for at least 30 minutes every day

  • Aim for 60 minutes of moderate activity or 30 minutes of vigorous activity every day as your fitness improves

  • Limit sedentary habits

Fast Facts

  • Physical inactivity is the 4th leading cause of death worldwide

  • 1.9 billion people are overweight or obese worldwide

  • Being overweight or obese increases the risk of 11 cancers

World cancer day is on a Sunday this year. It is the perfect opportunity to do something fun and physically active with your family or friends whether it’s going for a hike or a long walk to Granville Island Market.
